Obesity among School Children

Obesity among School Children

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. This fat accumulation can be attributed to junk food which has high calorie content.

Modern day children don't like to eat the healthy food cooked at home; instead they prefer a treat for their taste buds. Their taste buds get drenched and the calorie consumption shoots through the roof. Accompanied with this is the lack of exercise. The lifestyle of the children is also to be blamed for this situation, as children are left with little time for exercise or playing outdoors after school and coaching classes.

Obesity leads to many diseases. Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of  premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to increased future risks, obese children experience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension and early onset of cardiovascular disease.

Prevention is pretty easy. Low calorie intake and mild exercise can save many trips to the doctor.
