Ragging in India

Ragging in India

What is ragging? In plain English, it means just bullying a new student. There are two kinds of Ragging, verbal and physical. The physical aspect was highlighted in the recent incident at a prestigious school,  where the student ragged had to be hospitalised with severe burn injuries.

Ragging has nowadays deteriorated into an evil activity, although it started during the British era in India with the aim of instilling in new students respect  for hierarchy, discipline and for enforcing traditions. The seniors, like the school prefect, were supposed to act like a substitute for the teacher of the juniors. However, they misuse their authority by becoming vulgar and violent, which have in some cases led to students getting seriously injured or even dying in rare cases. Some other students have also committed suicide as a reaction to severe ragging.

The solution is to control ragging by regular patrolling of the school premises by teachers and mature seniors. They should pay particular attention to the school hostels during non -school hours, when ragging is more frequent. Sensitising sessions may also be held for the senior students so that they don't descend to evil practices while ragging fresh students.
